Hospital Capacity: Friday 03 January

As you will all be aware, we are now in the midst of winter and all parts of the health service are experiencing increased demand and pressures. We wanted to start by thanking you for all of your hard work over the festive season and into the New Year.

We also wanted to share specific updates on our local hospitals:

Addenbrooke’s Hospital

Around a third of the hospital’s wards now contain patients with flu or other respiratory viruses, which has led to severe pressure and limited capacity at the moment.

The team has asked that all urgent and emergency referrals are discussed with the hospital prior to admission by calling the GP liaison sister on 01223 274445. If you need to speak to specialist Consultants for advice and early access to outpatient clinics, you can find the information in GP connect.

North West Anglia Foundation Trust

There are currently long waiting times in both Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke EDs, with severe pressure and limited capacity across the hospitals as well.

The team has asked that referrals to the Emergency Department at Peterborough City Hospital are made by calling 01733 678776 first, or 01733 678716 for frail elderly patients. For any other referrals please call the switchboard on 01733 678000

For patients who require acute assessment at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, either in Ambulatory Care or the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), please call the AAU GP hotline on 01480 416462. To discuss potential alternative management pathways please call the GP switchboard number on 01480 416252 and ask for the Medical Registrar on bleep 1116.

Urgent Treatment Centres and Minor Injury Units

Providers have confirmed that all MIUs and UTCs across the system are fully staffed all day today, with no significant pressures reported.

NHS 111

Herts Urgent Care have confirmed that the CAS and OOHs are fully staffed until 11pm across the system, with current call volumes within the expected range.

We are sharing messages via social media to encourage people to self care, call NHS 111 and/or visit their local Pharmacist as well, to reduce pressures on both Primary and Secondary care during this particularly busy time.

We want to emphasise how much we appreciate the incredible work you do during these busy winter months.

If you have any concerns regarding the impact of hospital capacity on your practice, please do not hesitate to contact our Accountable Officer, Jan Thomas, about this via CAPCCG.AO@nhs.net

Congratulations to Dr Nalini Jitendra Modha

The CCG would like to congratulate Dr Nalini Modha, GP at Thistlemoor Medical Centre, on being awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to the NHS in the 2020 New Year's Honours List.

Dr Modha pioneered work in the 90s and 2000s relating to workforce development related to healthcare assistants and nurses, bringing the idea of HCA’s from the USA and personalised this to primary care and the NHS among other achievements.

Dr Modha said: "I am surprised, astonished and humbled to have received the honour. This recognition is a massive tribute to those that have supported me over the years, firstly my husband and son who work alongside me and secondly some managers in the NHS (including the CCG's Accountable Officer Jan Thomas) who have supported our vision for delivering healthcare in a different way focussed on multi-professional work and ensuring the GP concentrates on where they add most value to the consultation. I have thoroughly enjoyed focussing on a deprived population within Peterborough as I feel this is where we can make a real difference. Working at Thistlemoor has been and continues to be an absolute pleasure".
