Reminder: 'Time for Care in General Practice' showcase event - 08 November 2017
You are cordially invited to Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG’s ‘Time for Care in General Practice’ showcase event at the Huntingdon Marriot Hotel on Wednesday 8 November 2017.
This event is open to General Practitioners, Practice Managers and other key stakeholders involved in delivering change. Please register online here.
Lunch and registration will be available from 12.00pm with the event starting promptly at 1.00pm. The event will finish at 5.00pm.
GP practice delegates will explore opportunities to learn how practices around England, including some within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are:
- Freeing up time and developing themselves to become productive and efficient general practices
- Exploring the practicalities of making changes yourself and consider together how you want to sustain and improve care in general practice
- Accessing information and case studies, including local examples of success
- Increasing knowledge of the High Impact Actions and a deeper understanding of the practicalities of using them in practice, in addition to renewed confidence in your own ability to manage workload better.

- Hosted by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group, and is being organised in partnership with NHS England.
- Facilitated by Dr Robert Varnam, Director of General Practice Development at NHS England.

Research updates
Please see below the latest developments from the world of healthcare Research and Innovation:
- Tailored messages almost double the odds of medication adherence Automated telephone and text messaging interventions almost double the odds of adherence to medication when compared to usual care, according to a systematic review of research studies, published today by Dr Kassavou and Professor Sutton. The review set out to assess how well automated telecommunications (including voice messages and text messages) can support medication adherence.
- The Clinical Research Network's Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is running again this November and is now open for registration. The MOOC is a four week online course and is free of charge. The course, which is delivered by FutureLearn, works alongside online materials and an online community of learners, and aims to answer some pertinent questions including, 'How are treatments and cures discovered?', 'What is the impact of clinical research?', 'How do we undertake clinical research?' and 'Why do we do clinical research?'. The fifth MOOC is entitled 'Improving Healthcare through Clinical Research’ and will run from 6 November 2017
- Research Skills Course 22nd & 23rd November 2017, Papworth Hospital. This two day course will give you a useful introduction to the practice, methods, theories, regulations and key resources which clinical researchers can use to plan, design and conduct clinical research projects in the NHS. It is suitable for clinical researchers, clinical fellows, research nurses, research coordinators and research allied health professionals. This course awards 12 credits from the Royal College of Physicians (UK) external CPD scheme.

Care Quality Commission
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has today published its report on an Outstanding GP practice in Cambridge.
Congratulations to the Cambridge Access Surgery on this achievement. The practice was found to be providing an exemplary service to its patients when it was inspected in August. The full report can be read on the CQC website here

NHS England to help tackle rising costs of GP indemnity with £10 million
NHS England has announced plans to help strengthen out-of-hours GP services during the winter period by making £10 million available for indemnity costs. Full article here.

Female Genital Mutilation Prevention Programme is offering a series of FREE webinars
The Female Genital Mutilation Prevention Programme is offering a series of FREE webinars over the coming months. FGM is child abuse and illegal and all statutory professionals play a crucial role in caring for and safeguarding those at risk.
We have VERY limited numbers at each webinar and we are offering sessions FREE of charge. In the current climate, you will be aware that this is a valuable offer, and we would ask for cooperation in using places appropriately. Each webinar is for 1hour:
- If two people or more people from your organisation would like to attend a session, please book one space and arrange for a meeting room/office in which you can use a speaker phone to all join the session whilst only taking one place.
- Please also make sure you are definitely able to attend any sessions you book.
- If you need to cancel, please let us know with as much notice as possible, so we can offer it to someone else.

On 18 October 1-2pm we'll be welcoming Dr Ruth Bastable for her Opioid Aware Next Steps webinar. Opioids have a very limited place in the management of chronic pain, yet there has been a 450% risk in the amount of opioids prescribed in the last 10 years. Most of this is for chronic pain. During this webinar we will look at what can we do about this? How can we help patients with chronic pain? How can we recognise patients at risk of problematic opioid prescribing? As usual there will be time for a Q&A session at the end.
