Change to travel vaccine PGDs.
NHS England recently wrote to practices to inform them of a change to travel vaccine PGDs.
As you may know Public Health England have in the past, produced PGDs for travel vaccines, namely Combined Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B, Combined Hepatitis A and Typhoid, Typhoid and Hepatitis A.
NHS England have advised that although they commission several vaccines as part of the Section 7a agreement, they do not commission these travel vaccines, so when the current PGDs expire on 31st March 2017 they will not be renewed by the screening and immunisation team.
There are plans from the national team to produce these PGDs, but there is no timescale for the release of these national documents, so local arrangements will need to be put into place until this happens.
In the interim, we would advise that practice nurses use patient specific directions.

Cardiology Primary Care Training
A FREE one day Cardiology Primary Care Training Programme for GPs - Sat 17 June 2017. Please see a programme leaflet here and the training course leaflet here.
A company called Accession is co-ordinating the delivery of a one day primary care training programme in Cardiology, on behalf of The BMS Pfizer Alliance, for our GPs. The programme is RCGP accredited and fully funded by the BMS-Pfizer Alliance under the medical education, goods and services clause.
This is a non-promotional training program that aims to up-skill GPs, and other relevant practitioners in your practice, to optimise the management of your patients with CVD in primary care. The potential benefits include improving the detection of HF and AF, as well as reducing the stroke rates and hospital admissions.
There will not be any representative or employee from the sponsoring companies at the event, nor will there be any promotional content in the course presentations.
The program will be delivered by Dr Yassir Javid, a GPwSI in Cardiology, who is widely recognised for his expertise and passion for Cardiology in primary care. The programme will focus on the following areas:
- Atrial fibrillation
- Heart Failure
- Interpretation of routine cardiac tests inc. ECG and Echo reports.
The CGG will be working with Dr Javid to tailor this programme to our local need.
The training will take place on Saturday 17th June 2017, 9am-4.30pm. Venue still TBC.

Reminder: pre-election period (22 March – 4 May 2017)
The pre-election period for the Local and Mayoral elections is until 4 May 2017. The pre-election guidance limits the promotional activity and announcements that the NHS can make during this period. External communications should remain factual.
Public consultations that have begun before the start of the pre-election period can continue to run during the pre-election period. However we should not announce a new one, advertise an existing one or announce the results of one that has ended during the pre-election period. This relates to all forms of external communications including social media. There is no problem with continuing to issue general health advice via social media during the pre-election period.

Launch of GP Retention Scheme and GP Forward View update
The GP Forward View one year on paper was presented to NHS England’s Board on Thursday last week. This paper, available on the NHS England website, provides a round-up of delivery on the GP Forward View in the last year.
As part of this, from 1 April 2017, the GP Retention Scheme will replace the Retained Doctors Scheme 2016. The scheme is aimed at doctors who are seriously considering leaving or have left general practice. The scheme offers the practice a payment of £76.92 per session that the retained GP works in recognition of the fact that this role is different to a ‘regular’ part-time, salaried GP post, offering greater flexibility and educational support.
The retained GP is offered an annual professional expenses supplement of between £1,000 and £4,000 to go towards the cost of indemnity cover, professional expenses and continued professional development needs.

Next steps on the NHS Five Year Forward View
On 31 March 2017 the NHS published the Next steps on the NHS Five Year Forward View, outlining further support for strengthening and transforming GP practices, as it continues to improve and care for more patients.

Alzheimer’s Society
Peterborough Dementia Resource Centre prepares for Saturday opening.
Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Resource Centre for Peterborough is opening its doors on Saturday 22 April to give free advice to anyone with questions about dementia.
Staff will be on hand from 10am – 2pm to offer information, support and advice. The Alzheimer’s Society team are particularly keen to welcome people affected by dementia who are unable to access our services during normal office hours.

The Shifting Sands of General Practice, RCGP East Anglia Faculty Conference 10 May
This year's Faculty Conference is being held on Wednesday 10 May at The Athenaeum, Bury St Edmunds. The Conference is open to ALL members of the Primary Care Team so please do give this some serious consideration.
The theme for this year's event is 'The Shifting Sands of General Practice' and has a very interesting programme with high profile speakers and a wealth of workshops to choose from. There is FREE parking available on the day and lunch and morning/afternoon coffee/tea breaks are included.

Postgraduate Centre Lunchtime Lectures - Peterborough City Hospital
Can I remind everyone that on the last Tuesday of each month (except Easter and Christmas) at lunchtime, there is a postgraduate lecture given by one of our local consultants or a visiting dignitary for GPs, consultants nurses, radiologists, physiotherapists HCA and any clinicians involved directly in patient care. This takes place in the "Learning Centre" on the 4th floor of PCH.
There is a buffet lunch provided from 12 noon. the lecture is from 12:45pm to 1:30pm with Q&As from 1:30pm to 1:45pm. There is one tomorrow Tuesday 28 March.
Please be aware that car parking in Car Park A at PCH is now free for those GPs, nurses and other health workers who wish to come to the postgraduate lunchtime lecture meetings in all months apart from December.
It is an opportunity to meet and greet colleagues, pick the brains of learned colleagues and attempt to generate an atmosphere of medical camaraderie once more.
Please make a diary date for the last Tuesday of each month and see if you can plan ahead to make time to come to as many as possible.
