Help patients take part in local dementia research
In order to test and develop effective new treatments for dementia through three major studies, CPFT research teams urgently need referrals for suitable patients, family, friends and neighbours who could benefit from taking part in dementia research and would like to try new medications or therapeutic approaches. If you are caring for, or know anyone who might be eligible to participate, please get in touch directly with the study leads below. They will be happy to talk with potential participants and explain the studies in more detail, or answer any questions you might have about the research.
Patients and carers working with the Windsor Research Unit have shared very positive feedback on their experiences of research, which can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience to enhance care.
SYMBAD: Study of Mirtazapine for Agitation in Dementia
Agitation in dementia can cause significant problems and reduced quality of life for patients, families and carers. Medicines are available to help manage agitation, but it is not clear which treatments work best. This study is designed to evaluate the use of Mirtazapine versus placebo in treating agitation in people with dementia,and a research nurse will be regularly visiting the patient and carer to carry out assessments and safety checks. Anyone with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and regular or intermittent agitation can be referred to take part, and they need acarer or study partner available to support assessments and supervise medication. BI425809 study for Alzheimer’s Disease patients and carers
This clinical research study is looking at a potential new treatment for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease. The study team are currently seeking patients and their carers, who may wish to take part. You can refer anyone diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease who is able to provide written consent and answer questions about memory, thinking and reasoning, aged 55 years or over with a partner who can join every visit. MISSION AD: Investigating treatment for early Alzheimer’s Disease
CPFT has joined a global study to investigate a drug to treat the early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) due to AD. The Mission AD clinical research programme is evaluating the efficacy and safety of elenbecestat (E2609), an investigational drug which can reduce build-up of beta amyloid plaque and nerve cell damage, to see if it can help people with Alzheimer’s Disease in the future. The study runs over 24 months and needs participants aged 50-85 years, with a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer’s Disease. They must be able to provide written consent and have a reliable informant or study partner to support them. Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) 2018/19
Please remember that your Data Security and Protection Toolkit for 2018/19 needs to be published by 31 March 2019. Currently, 59 of our member practices have registered on the new Toolkit, 49 of which have also completed their organisational profile.
The DSPT Start and Administrator Guides (attached below) provide an overview of the registration process; completing your organisational profile and Assertions through to publication of your Assessment.
Registration is at: https://www.dsptoolkit.nhs.uk/Account/Register - your email address and a valid organisation code is required.
Annual completion of the Toolkit demonstrates to the Information Commissioner’s Office that your Practice complies with its legal obligations. The CQC will also be able to view whether a submission has been made. With effect from 1 February 2015, the ICO has had the power to enforce an audit of GP surgeries under section 41A of the Data Protection Act (DPA). Please also check that your Data Protection Registration has not expired.
The CCG's IG Team will run regular uptake reports until the end of March 2019, any individual reminders required will be sent via the CCG's Primary Care Team.

The latest winter communications toolkit is now available on the Health Professionals website HERE. Eastern region announces world first for Rebo the NHS Research Robot!NHS research could not happen without patients and the public participating but raising awareness of opportunities to get involved can be a challenge. Therefore, to help spread the word the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in the Eastern region is launching the world's first video game to tell the story of how scientists have found treatments for health conditions like diabetes through research.

Non-urgent attendances to emergency departments are more common among younger adults-Adults aged 16 to 44 years are more likely to attend emergency departments for non-urgent presentations than older adults. They were more than three times more likely to present for non-urgent reasons than those over 65 years. Non-urgent attendances are also more common during out-of-hours periods, especially at night.

Do image-based warning labels reduce selection of sugary drinks by parents for their children? The use of warning labels on sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) is considered by UK and US governments as a possible intervention to help tackle excess sugar consumption. Evidence for the impact of warning labels comes from their use on tobacco products, which suggests that both text- and image-based warnings can affect a range of effectiveness outcomes, including cessation-related behaviors.
