New mental health support for mums

A new set of mental health leaflets offer support for mums, their families, and the teams that care for them. The eight leaflets cover a broad range of topics including postnatal depression, postpartum psychosis and perinatal OCD, and the use of lithium and antipsychotics in pregnancy and breastfeeding. They offer advice and signpost to promote better understanding and support people in making decisions about perinatal mental health issues. The leaflets have been written jointly by perinatal psychiatrists, women with lived experience of perinatal mental illness, and their partners. They have been delivered in partnership by RCPsych, NHS England and HEE. NHS England website.

International GP Recruitment

We are delighted that we already have two International GPs working in our Cambridgeshire and Peterborough area. We are due to have some more GPs arrive in the UK early in 2019 and so we would like to re-issue the invitation to C&P practices to become part of this exciting initiative.

The international GP recruitment programme is one of the key commitments in the GP Forward View, and supports both the national and our local priority of strengthening and supporting our GP workforce.

We are keen to make the most of this opportunity and to support our members who would like to be part of this initiative.

If your GP practice would like to find out more and is interested in welcoming an International GP to their practice then please contact us for more information.

You will be supported throughout the process in key areas such as:

  • Completing the practice readiness checklist
  • Issuing employment Contracts
  • Obtaining the available funding for the practice
  • Indemnity requirements and registrations
  • Working with HEE for any required IGP Training
  • The interview process
  • General support for you and the GP

If you would like to get involved or would like to get some more information, then please do not hesitate to speak to Janet Nix (janet.nix@nhs.net). Janet is the IGPR Project Support Officer for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG. She will be more than happy to speak to you further and/or come to your practice to provide you with more details.

Please see below the latest developments from the world of Healthcare Research and Innovation:

  • Clinical trial found my cancer and saved my life
  • This week Cancer Research UK highlights the story of Liz who took the Cytosponge test when she joined the BEST3 trial. The BEST3 trial, based in Cambridge, has been supported by GP practices across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. To date, the Cytosponge has been tested on over 1,000 patients at GP surgeries in East Anglia, the North East, Hampshire, Nottingham, North London, Yorkshire and Oxfordshire. The story is accompanied by a video https://youtu.be/Y9TtTkHj9fs
  • Multimorbidity and mental health services – a combined challenge?
  • Much is made of the need to adapt health services for patients with multimorbidity, and much is made of the need to improve struggling mental health services.  They’re often presented as separate challenges. News stories can conjure up images of older patients with multiple physical problems such as heart disease and osteoarthritis, or typically younger individuals struggling to get help living with their autism, schizophrenia or addictions. However, our analyses of primary care data demonstrate that mental health conditions more commonly occur in patients with physical health conditions – and vice versa.  And health services are not designed well to help patients with both.
  • Podcast series shines a light on clinical research
  • From clinical trials in pregnancy, to priority setting partnerships, to involving patients and the public. The Health Research Futures podcast series covers the key topics in clinical research.

The R&D team are located on the 4th floor of Lockton House. If you want to get in touch about our weekly research updates, please contact Sarah Hider (sarah.hider@nhs.net).
