‘Stronger for longer’ – new campaign
‘Stay stronger for longer’ is a new campaign for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough that highlights how simple strength and balance exercises just twice a week can help older people reduce their risk of falling and keep doing the things they enjoy.
The campaign, which launches on 01 October 2018, will encourage older people (particularly women 70-79 years old) to join local classes or access home programmes online. GP Practices are encouraged to help promote this campaign to patients via
- Stronger for longer challenge leaflet and poster – all practices should of already received copies of these. Additional copies are available by contacting email@example.com
- Strength and balance classes. These are designed to be friendly, fun and social and details of them can be found at:
- GP Communications toolkit - available online HERE and includes easy to use resources such as website copy, social media posts and images to help raise awareness within GP practices and the local community
The ‘Stay stronger for longer’ campaign has been developed by Cambridgeshire County Council, Peterborough City Council and will work alongside local NHS health partners. For further information please contact firstname.lastname@example.org

New online resource to support adults with Type 1 diabetes
Living with a long term condition can be difficult and stressful. Access to information, resources and support is key in helping people manage their condition. The NHS Diabetes Programme, with its partners Diabetes UK and NHS Digital have developed new content on NHS.UK, which was formally NHS Choices. This letter from Dr Partha Kar, NHS England Deputy National Clinical Director Diabetes, informs of this new resource which provides practical information at diagnosis, such as videos on how to inject insulin, how to check blood glucose levels and the check-ups and appointments they should attend. As people with T1 often feel overlooked, it is important all Health Care Practitioners, even at a CCG level, are aware of this resource to pass on to patients.
Flu vaccines for people aged 65 and over
People aged 65 and over will be offered the newly-licensed adjuvanted trivalent vaccine, an enhanced form of the vaccine given to this age group in 2017/18, which is designed to boost an immune response improving the effectiveness of the vaccine in this older age group. This was not available for the 2017/18 season. The vaccine will be delivered to GPs and pharmacies in three phases between September and November.

HUC is currently looking to recruit OOH GPs for the coming winter months. To find out more about OOH opportunities please visit Herts Urgent Care (HUC) website HERE. Each individual GP will need to check their individual circumstances and not assume they are covered for all the work they do.

Parkhall Surgery - merger update
As of 01 October 2018 Parkhall Surgery will be merging with two other local practices (Orchard Surgery in St Ives and Northcote House in St Ives and Fenstanton). The merged practice will be called Riverport Medical Practice.
Reminder: Provision of equipment (MSK)
Practices are reminded that patients should be buying any basic MSK equipment, wrist/hand splits or knee supports from local supermarkets and pharmacies and should not be referred to Cambridgeshire Community Services (CCS). CCS only provides equipment to patients on their pathways.
If patients require more specialist equipment they should be referred to the orthotic service at the acute trusts.
