NHS England and NHS Improvement
Community Pharmacy Oral Health Campaign
National Smile Month is running from 13 May to June. In support, NHS England and NHS Improvement have launched a campaign to help parents and carers stop children under five-years-old from experiencing tooth decay. Pharmacies will display posters and provide advice on healthy dental habits, such as consuming less sugar, brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and going to the dentist regularly. This supports our ambition to stop tooth decay in children; extraction of decayed teeth remains the leading cause of hospital admission for five to nine-year-olds. Helpful resources are available on British Society of Paediatric Dentistry's website.
Toolkit for Tackling Chronic Opioid Use in Non-Cancer Pain’

It has been supported by NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care East of England, hosted by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. Diabetes LES 2018/19 Year End Report
We thought it would be helpful to remind practices that the Diabetes LES Reporting Template was due back on 15 April 2019. Please ensure you have returned your completed template by close of play 24th May 2019. Many thanks to those practices that have already submitted their reporting templates.
A link to the Diabetes LES Reporting Template has been included for ease of reference here, and a link to the original Diabetes SLA can be found here (section 5 service delivery can be found on page 1).
In summary practices will need to:
-
Provide a brief description to explain the processes in place to support case finding and integrated working between primary, community and acute services. Including a brief description to explain the practices’ approach to improve NDA baseline (2015/16) for delivering treatment targets: blood pressure control, HbA1C and cholesterol.
-
Provide dates (2018/19 only) of VCRs with the consultant or DSN and dietician. Unfortunately VCRs in some areas are not up and running, we are working to make this happen. In the meantime practices are encouraged to hold practice visits with the community team, you can book these with the DSN or dietician directly or via CPFT admin. Practices will not be penalised for not having VCR in this financial year.
-
Provide dates (2018/19 only) of practice visits. This may have been arranged with neighbouring practices as an opportunity to share best practice and learning.
-
Provide a brief description to explain the processes in place at the practice to support referrals to diabetes structured education, accurate coding, and follow up of patients who DNA.
-
Details of healthy conversations training (2018/19 only).
-
Provide the numbers of patients offered and accepted referral (2018/19 only)to the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme and to provide details of the processes in place at the practice to refer patients to the programme.

And then attend … Measurement for Improvement Masterclass
NB/ This masterclass builds on knowledge gained from previous Quality Improvement Workshops i.e. Foundations of QI workshop and/or QI tools and techniques workshop. It is important that delegates have attended at least one of these workshops before attending Measurement for Improvement Masterclass.
Human Factors Masterclass
There is increasing recognition of the need to embed human factors science into the design of healthcare systems and processes.
The masterclass will explore: What do we mean by human factors science? How can we apply human factors methods and principals to create safer healthcare systems? What is the evidence base that applying human factors design principles improves patient safety? How can we enhance the non-technical skills of healthcare teams? How can Leaders for Improvement embed human factors thinking in their own organisation? The session will be interactive and attendees, whether they be clinical or non-clinical, will take away tools and knowledge that they can apply to their workplace.
