Ernest is a local participant in the National NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme. Here he speaks about how the programme has helped him “change the direction of my life forever.”
What was the best part of the programme for you?
“Being in a group – participants asked a variety of questions, which in turn inspired our health coach to expand on the subject. They constructively provided more technical details for the more knowledgeable members and then explained in simpler terms for the benefit of beginners like me.”
What was the hardest part?
“Learning the actual difference between good things to eat and bad – this took time for me, but the extended timescale of the course including short and regular reviews gave me time to internalise what we were being taught.”
Did you feel supported throughout?
“Yes, greatly – my group and our leader were very supportive. A good mixture of very well-informed people, from keep-fitters to outright but keen beginners like me worked wonderfully with our health coach, Charlotte, to create an atmosphere of collective learning and sharing of experiences which I found most encouraging. A great way to learn! I found the e-mail support from Charlotte very helpful too. She encouraged us to e-mail her if we had a question or request that might crop up between sessions.”
How has the programme changed your life?
“Quite a lot – I now know enough about how to examine an ingredients list and spot good and bad ingredients, with a fair knowledge of how each will impact on my risk for Type 2 Diabetes, as well as other health issues such as Cholesterol and characteristics like slow-release sugars (know as a glycaemic index).”
Will you continue to follow the programme now you have finished?
“Of course, and with great dedication! It has changed the direction of my life for ever. Not only have I learned about the effects of various nutrients, exercises etc. on my body’s functioning but also the need to maintain the principles I have learned to prolong my life in as healthy and active condition as I can for as long as I can. I intend to continue to lead an active and positive life for a long time forward.”
Would you recommend the programme to others?
“Yes! I have told all of my friends and others of the benefits of this course, both in avoiding Diabetes and in generally structuring their eating and activity habits to maintain a satisfying lifestyle in a healthy and positive way.”
