12,000 extra appointments offered to Peterborough patients, thanks to seven day access to day services.

An extra 12,000 GP practice appointments have been offered across Greater Peterborough since last September, made possible by extended health services which have just been secured for at least another year.

The seven day access to GP services has proven popular with patients, and health chiefs are keen for it to continue, as it also helps to support the growing pressures on other health services.

Patients registered at all GP practices across Greater Peterborough can currently book appointments as late as 8:30pm Monday-Friday, as well as on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Practices have been working together under the umbrella of the Greater Peterborough Network GP Federation to provide seven day services to all patients, regardless of the surgery they are registered with.

To book an appointment, patients simply need to phone their own practice as they would do normally, and they will be advised of which appointments are available and where – patients may be asked to attend a practice other than their own, but the health professional that sees them will still have full access to their health records.

Dr Harshad Mistry, local GP and Greater Peterborough Network Board Member, says: “We’ve been given the funding to offer an additional 130 hours of appointments with a GP, nurse or health care assistant, across Greater Peterborough, for another year.

“This is fantastic news for patients and what many have been asking us for. It’s good for other local health services too, as by increasing the availability of GP services outside core hours we hope to reduce pressure across the local NHS and help keep patients out of hospital.

“The valuable and much-needed extended access to health services has been made possible by the additional funding, allocated by the Prime Minister’s GP Access Fund. It has allowed Peterborough GP practices to work together to help deliver better access to health services across the city.”

Patients should speak to their GP practice reception to find out more about appointments seven days a week.
