To coincide with Diabetes Week (10 to 16 June) people in Cambridge who live with, or are affected by diabetes will be given the opportunity to learn more about how to live well with the condition.
Diabetes UK and NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are jointly hosting an event on Tuesday 11 June at Cambridge United Football Club, Newmarket Road, Cambridge, CB5 8LN, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
The Diabetes Public Engagement event will offer the opportunity to meet some of the charity’s Eastern team and other people living with the condition. Key healthcare professionals will also be on hand to give an overview on local diabetes care and what the future holds for people living with, or caring for someone with the condition.
Peter Shorrick, Diabetes UK Midlands and East of England Regional Head, said:
“Developing a deeper understanding of diabetes and how best to manage the condition is vital. Access to the right advice and healthcare support is key to reducing some of the complications associated with diabetes that is not well managed.
“I strongly urge anyone living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes to attend this meeting. People with diabetes spend around three hours with a healthcare professional every year, which is why it is so important that they gain the skills and confidence to cope with the daily demands of managing this complex condition.”
“We are especially pleased to be holding this event during Diabetes Week, we know diabetes is complicated and hard to understand so we want to help people know about diabetes. Not just as a condition, but about how it feels to live with it. We want people to see diabetes differently.”
Dr Jessica Randall-Carrick, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Diabetes Clinical Lead, said:
“We are keen to hear your thoughts and views on local diabetes services, whether you have diabetes yourself, or someone you care for is affected. It’s important that we hear the views of local people so that we can provide services which meet people’s needs. If you’ve always wanted to find out more about local diabetes care then please come along to this event.
“In Cambridgeshire there are more than 47,000 people have been diagnosed with diabetes, so it’s important we hear from you to help provide the right services, now and for the future.”
In the UK 4.7 million people have diabetes with around 90 per cent living with Type 2 diabetes.
