An estimated 46,000 people in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough live with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. Research shows that living with Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes sadly significantly increases the risk of suffering severe illness for those individuals who contract COVID-19, meaning it’s now more important than ever to manage your Diabetes well, and to make healthy lifestyle choices that could reduce your risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes if you’re currently at high risk.
90% of adults with Diabetes have Type 2 Diabetes rather than Type 1 Diabetes. You cannot reduce your risk of Type 1 Diabetes, but the risk of Type 2 Diabetes can be managed. If you’re not sure whether you are at high risk of Type 2 Diabetes, you can either speak to your GP or pharmacy, or use Diabetes UK’s RiskScore tool completely free of charge via www.riskscore.diabetes.org.uk.
If you are at high risk of Type 2 Diabetes, you can self-refer to the National Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP) by visiting https://preventing-diabetes.co.uk/Know-your-risk-dtc/. NDPP is an educational programme which can support you to make healthier lifestyle choices and reduce your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. Our local team has helped over 80% of people achieve remission of their Pre- or Borderline Diabetes through NDPP.
People who currently manage a Type-2 Diabetes diagnosis can visit the CPFT Diabetes Service website to access support. If you are managing a Type-1 Diabetes diagnosis, please speak to your GP to get referred to support services.
